What Should I Do If I Lose a Filling?

Posted on 3/1/2024 by Weo Admin
illlustration of a partially missing fillingIn the grand scheme of dental issues, losing a filling is a relatively common issue to have. No filling lasts forever, and the length of time, as well as your diet, chewing habits, and dental hygiene, play a part in how long each of your fillings will last. Here is what you should do if you notice you are missing a filling.

What Are Fillings Used For?

Fillings are the primary way that our dentist fills in the holes caused by dental caries or cavities. All cavities are caused by acids in bacteria that eat away at your tooth enamel. Over time, these acids can cause a hole to form in your enamel. If a cavity is not treated and filled in with a filling, it can continue to grow, which will eventually cause a tooth infection and lead to both pain and, eventually, tooth loss.

If You Lose a Filling

Many people think if they lose a filling, it is not that big of a deal. However, because a filling is used to fix a cavity, there is a good chance that you will experience further tooth issues now that the filling is out. You will want to give our office a call as soon as possible to have your filling replaced. The larger the filling that you lost, the more important it is for you to get it replaced.

When you know you lost a filling, and you call our office to schedule an appointment for a replacement filling, your next step will be to care for your tooth while you wait. If you are in pain due to the lost filling, you can apply ice to the area and take over-the-counter pain relievers. Also, be sure that you are not adding extra stress to your tooth. Do not chew near the tooth, and be careful brushing and flossing.

If you are concerned that your tooth may have a problem, such as a crack or chip, call our office right away. We can schedule you to see one of our dentists as soon as possible.
